Somtimes, I hate computers. Obviously, so do you. I empathize.

The buggeth doth runneth amoketh....

(I mean what sort of sadistic dingleberry would code what inanity you indicate here except to drive sysadmins [et al] IN-SANE!? Oh yes, "the salt of the Earth - you know, MORONS." [cf Blazing Saddles])

Oboy. It's late and I've had too much Pinot Noir AND Meridian Chard...

An awful lot of 3rd-party UNIX installers do seem to be wildly overcomplicated.

Mmm, yummy!

Oh, and I hate InstallShield with a passion. That is all.

Weren't InstallShield some Winduhs behemoth?

But serves you right for going the ways of the dark Satan and installing modern hardware, you, you, modern hardware person.

UltraSparcIIi's should be enough for anyone.

It's all part of an evil plan to make you insane.

That, uh, I have absolutely no hand in.

On the contrary - this SS1+ works so well, why should I spend the effort of porting its apps?

If you're gonna run Sun4, SS20s are cheaper than dirt. I wouldn't bother with anything less than a uSparcII based SS5, personally.

There is a simple explanation for this, which is that installing on UNIX is wildly overcomplicated.

I was hoping for a true explanation as well as a simple one.

I have enough other Suns here (SS10,U1,U2), but, again, why should I bother? It costs me exactly zero hours of effort to leave it as it is, as compared to a couple if I wanted to move the software elsewhere.

I don't know...I'd think you'd get tired of waiting on a 1+. It's not like moving the disk to a 4m and updating the kernel would take more than a few minutes. I don't even bother to turn on my Indy at home anymore, and it's half a decade newer than your S1+.

There's a "Generic Answer" for every technical field.

In biology, the answer is probably "enzymes".

(Enzymes, Drieux! NOT electrolytes. "Enzymes: It's What ANIMALS Want...")

In software, "It's a Security Feature..."

We've all been there...

I don't really miss Solaris. I'm happy in Linux Land.

Mind you, USPS only officially sanctioned use of Linux in the environemt like 3 months ago...

Really? Fascinating. I'm still ticked that there's no Reiserfs support by default in RHEL/Centos.

Oh well, at least I got a 400GB RAID 5 shelf built today. the amount of layers involved in this storage build is getting obnoxious...
