You know, if the locals don't give much of a crap about the official name change, why should i?
Gowda, my driver, picked me up from the airport (after an interminable, Office Spacesque wait in line at Immigration) and honked a lot less than some of the other drivers. STOP means slow down and right of way is determined by who got there first, more or less. The President Hotel is very nice. I tipped the bellhop 100 rupees (about US$2.50) because i have no clue how much is fair; he seemed happy enough.
I'm beat. I don't think i'm jetlagged, which is a good thing. Shower and bed now.

Date: 2006-08-28 04:48 pm (UTC)The book was called The Red Carpet and it was mostly from the perspective of the young people as they struggle to come to terms with the conflict of the traditional ways and the new wave of outsourcing, software development, and American born or American educated Indians returning to India. Mostly what's illustrated is the conflict, I found less resolution except that the character have to both accept the old and new and find ways to blend and reconcile them. Some of the progressives move back towards traditional values, and some of the traditionalists accept the new with certain provisions. To resist influences from either extreme is to be isolated from both seems to be the author's basic premise.
