I'm the only massive Cherryh fan I know who's never quite been able to get into the Faded Sun books.
Recommendation, if you haven't yet: try the Chanur series instead. It's the only rendition of the cat-aliens meme I've found that I like. Plus it's got a species that spawns under stress.
