I do that, too, but it doesn't provoke shame, just wholesale irritation. I ascribe it to growing up in a furrin land and picking up most of my early vocabulary from books. The one i remember mispronouncing most vividly was variety, VAR-yet-ee. I still find a word once in a while i mispronounce, and my stepkids mock me for it. Feh.
