letter to espn.com's chris broussard
Dec. 19th, 2006 06:44 pm[The Allen Iverson trade] could backfire [for the Philadelphia 76ers] if [Andre] Miller makes the Sixers too good this season. Too good meaning "not the worst team in the league."No athlete, no team, should ever play to lose. That attacks the very concept of sport. A team should "earn" the top pick on "merit"; they should play their hardest, their best, and still end up last, because that's as good as they are. For a team to tank just to try to get the top draft pick is unsporting, unprofessional, and not entertaining. It's an insult to the paying fans. And i never want to see you advocate this again.
At this point, Philly should be playing for the top pick in (what they hope is) the Greg Oden Draft. If Miller leads them to far more wins than Charlotte, Memphis or any other bottom-feeder, it will be a failure.

soccer report
Dec. 19th, 2006 09:11 pmLast night, Crossfire lost to Ball Monsters, 7-3. We continue to make good progress; Maria and Javier, the captains, tried assigning set positions to people, and they seemed to yield decent results. We played a fairly tight game (scored the first goal again) until about halfway through the second half, when we lost our defensive composure (again). I had a couple of embarrassing goals: the first occurred when a shot bounced off my forearm and lobbed into the far corner; the other occurred when i dove and stifled a shot, but when i tried to put my hand on the ball to prevent it from rolling into the goal, i managed instead to slap it and push it in all the way. Apparently the ref didn't count it, but that barely ameliorated the chagrin. Despite the miscues, i was happy with my play; i was all over the box, throwing my body across the path of the ball and opposing players.
