AiT: Tell us about working with Dan Curtis Johnson.

Jeff Johns: MOONSHINE is crazy fun. It's a big drug-induced-Clint-Eastwood-Lovecraftian-werewolf-reptile-manimatronic- serial-killing casserole. But it's baked with love. Oh, and there's a Fancy Train.

I've always thought that a story really only needs two things to be successful--werewolves and eye patches. This one's got the werewolves, but Dan keeps vetoing the eye patch. I'm a little afraid that my need to draw eye patches is just going to fester until I end up doing something Garth Ennis-like and drawing someone with TWO eye patches.

It's been great working with Dan. He's been very supportive of trying to bring a newbie along. I'm slower than cold tar, so I think he's being just encouraging enough to make sure I keep producing. You know -- like a good pimp. His script for MOONSHINE kicks big man-sized ass, and now it's my job to make sure the book still kicks at least a little toddler-sized ass once it's been subjected to my art. I know it's been billed as a western version of "They Live", but personally, I think it's going to be a lot better. Carpenter should have cast Junk Yard Dog instead of Rowdy Roddy Piper. Or Brutus the Barber Beefcake.

Dan and I are having dinner Saturday, so I guess I'll find out then if I'm fired.
Mimi at AiT/PlanetLar says that Moonshine will be out in the fall. Can't wait.

movies!

I neglected to mention that, during our Napa trip, we stopped at Niebaum-Coppola, where the charge was $12 for tasting, so we passed, but it was still worth the visit, as the grounds and the inside of the mansion are beautiful.  And, yes, they have wine in a can.

So, that was about wine that tangentially related to movies... so now onto a movie where wine is a prime character.  Sideways is, perhaps, a bit overhyped these days, but it was still a really good story, with really good performances by all four main characters.  The movie seemed to gain in my mind the more i thought about it; Miles's episodes with the wine jug at Frass Canyon and at the hamburger joint at the end are as harrowing a case of self-injury as if he'd taken a blade and cut his arms.  I wonder, though, what exactly Maya saw in Miles; maybe that's the point?  I dunno.

The other movie we saw recently was The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou.  Damn, that was funny.  Bill Murray does his understated Bill Murray thing, so if you're tired of that, or if you don't like Wes Anderson, this isn't the movie for you.  Otherwise, it's a boatload of silliness, stop-motion animation, quirky characters, pregnant Cate Blanchett, Tagalog, Portuguese David Bowie covers, and imaginary marine life.  Also, you get to see Bill Murray's and Jeff Goldblum's weiners.

... that is the comments on Brad's acquisition announcement, i have concluded that:

  • People can't be bothered to read something before opening their goddamn yap and asking a question that was already answered in the announcement.
  • DRAMA!  SELF-RIGHTEOUS OUTRAGE!  ANGST!  These people probably need a hydraulic speculum to open their asses when they go do #2.
  • Mocking these people is fun, although it doesn't hold a candle to the mid-`90s on Usenet.
Oh well, at least it entertains me.
