i think i must have lost my mind

After a bitchfest with my Server Hardware & OS team co-members on Friday, the conclusion we extracted was that the most likely consequence of our boss leaving would be merging us back with the Data Center Management team and placing us all under that team's manager.

(Backstory: once upon a time there was the UNIX team and the Windows team and the Messaging team, and a reorg shuffled me and another guy to the Messaging team, and the UNIX and Windows teams were shifted into the SH&OS and DCM teams. Later, i was traded back to the SH&OS team under my old boss for an ex-Windows guy.)

Anyhow, none of us were happy with that idea. So over the weekend i mulled the whole thing over, and today i came to my boss and told him that i want to replace him, and asked him how to best go about putting myself in a position to have the best chance of getting the job.

Well, the raise would be nice, at the least.

The DBA Manager has quit, due to the same cause as my boss's imminent departure. This is not surprising. However, in talking to him, it has become clear to me that pursuing my boss's job is an indisputable sign that i am absolutely fucking insane. And yet, the alternatives (the DCM manager, or else some new person who will, no doubt, have pointy hair) are less palatable.

I have to do this. If things go well enough for a year or so, i'll have grown in all the right ways. If not... well, things were probably going to shit anyway.
