So, in the "Return of the Jedi" DVD, Lucas removed Sebastian Shaw's ghost appearance in the end of the movie and replaced it with Hayden Christensen.  Is there no end to Lucas's perfidy?  Why hasn't some crazed fan pied him in the face by now?  I know, i wish i could remove this emotional attachment i have to the Star Wars movies, because they really aren't that good.  But still... Lucas should not go unpunished.

Ha! I sort of called it in my very second evar post to ARK (http://groups.google.com/groups?hl=en&lr=&ie=UTF-8&safe=off&selm=7iki8p%24ivj%241%40news1.rmi.net). Well, not really.

That counts for full credit in my book. In fact, i'm going to blame YOU for giving Lucas the idea. Punk.

While I agree that Lucas is a douche for doing this, I feel a little better about the fact that the only SW movie I've seen was the first one.

In the original theatrical run.

That was enough.

Hey, how was I supposed to know that he scanned Usenet for ideas? I didn't know he worked for the Onion.

I still say episode three will be two hours of him rolling around naked in a pile of money and laughing. And there will be a giant space walrus, with, y'know, photon flippers or something.

Oh, bite me. Has George Lucas come into your home and made off with every copy of "Return" that doesn't have Christensen in it? No? OK then.

Is Mahler a low life scum because he edited his symphonies after their first performance / publication? How about Tolkein, who rewrote the riddle game episode of The Hobbit to make it consistent with The Lord of the Rings? How about anyone who's ever published a second edition of anything.

EARTH TO RONE: It's Lucas's movie.

I'm not saying he owes me anything; i'm saying he's making really retarded changes because, DUH, he's a douche. And so are you, douche!

Samuel Richardson made 6 major sets of revisions to his 1747 episodic novel Clarissa and it's universally agreed that every modification sucked. History will show that Lucas should stop fucking with a good thing.

There was a precedent for this, y'know, when Lucas replaced David Prowse with Sebastian Shaw in the original "Jedi".

So, anyone know what he's fucked with in the THX-1138 re-release?

They should reverse that and put Sebastian Shaw in place of Hayden Christensen in all the new movies.

Oh please. "Universally" no doubt means "a whole bunch of literature professors", and as soon as you invoke the infallibility of literature professors, you know you're arguing an indefensible position.

Prowse had appeared in a number of films (like Clockwork Orange and Horror of Frankenstein), and was well-known in the UK from television, so he was unhappy that he had to do the Vader role with his face completely covered. Since Lucas had told him he was planning to use his face in the unmasking scene, he was mightily pissed off when Shaw was given the role.

By all means, tell me who, other than Lucas, thinks that Lucas's "Greedo shoots first" change was a good idea.

You know, this might be flamebait, but screw y'all.

I say this. They're his movies. If he wants to tinker with them, then let him do as he pleases! People act like the fans own the movies. We don't own shit. He wants to make the final product that he makes. Artists should be so lucky. I personally will buy the DVD's, enjoy them, and go on my merry way.

It's his story to tell, and retell if he likes. If you don't like it, watch something else. Jeeezeus

at the very least, he should be consistent. if ghost vader is hayden christensen, shouldn't ghost obiwan be ewan macgregor?

otherwise, the choice is between "join the dark side, do whatever you want, have a deathbed conversion, and be young for eternity" versus "be a goody two-shoes and be a geezer forever." i look good in black, so i know which i'd choose.

Don't tempt him. I imagine in fifteen years Lucas will have nothing better to do with his life than refilm all of Alec Guiness' scenes using an older (plus makeup) Ewan MacGregor and digitally insert them into Ep 4-5.

[Answer 1:] Me. Or at least, I am not in the slightest bothered by it.

[Answer 2:] You miss the point. It doesn't matter who, other than Lucas, thinks it was a good idea. It's Lucas's movie.

... or rather, it matters, in the sense that it influences the way we as a culture evaluate the work. It doesn't matter in the sense of influencing Lucas's right to make the change. "I disapprove of what you say, yadda yadda yadda" -- Voltaire.

It's legitimate to regard Lucas as an idiot for making a bad change (if you regard the change as bad); it's pathetic fanboy posturing to condemn him as some kind of vandal or criminal for making it.

The readers at the time hated it too. I know readers=sheep, and 1000 people can be wrong, but I've never found a documented opinion (besides Richardson's himself) that felt the changes were the slightest bit enjoyable.

Voltaire never actually said that. It was written in a biography as the type of thing he might have said.

I know, I know, I just wish he hadn't gone back and digitally altered the soundtrack
so that every time someone said "TAtooine" they now say "taTOOine" just to make the
musical number "Road to Tatooine" work better rhythmically.

You say defacing a work of art isn't vandalism if it's being defaced by the author. I say you're wrong.

Ron: "Who'd know? Had anyone actually seen it before?"

ME! I saw it! It was long ago in a theater far, far away. It may have been before you were a sentient being, in the days of hardcopy edits and typewriters. (And dinosaurs)

Would I notice any changes? Right - as if I remember it at all! Bald heads. White room. Donald Pleasance (sp?). Robert Duvall? I read somewhere the DVD includes the original, the altered, and great goobery gobs of more stuff.
