Warren Ellis's explanation for where our lovely whooshy sci-fi future went strikes me as less plausible than James Nicoll's:

"When commercial fiction turns out to be a lousy guide to astronomical and astronautical developments (http://james-nicoll.livejournal.com/775777.html) some will despair. Personally, I am more irritated that it turns out Meg Ryan romance movies teach methods of courting that are inexplicably illegal."

Sign at an SF Giants game, aimed at Barry Bonds: "Babe Ruth did it on hot dogs and beer."
So which is the MLB getting rid of-- hotdogs or beer?

I didn't read this before because, you know, 'warren ellis' and 'disturbing' normally means do not click, for the love of god, montressor.

So, anyway, I'm confused: isn't he pointing out the troubling question and not answering it at all? I guess "Someone stole your future" is a "disturbing answer", but since he doesn't give a hint about the answer to "don't you ever wonder who?", much less give any evidence for the answer "someone stole your future", I'm totally lost.

Well, the answer is in his upcoming work "Doktor Sleepless".
