the four, no, five elements of food

Any recipe can be improved by judicious use of one or more of the following:

  • bacon
  • chocolate
  • cheese
  • butter
  • garlic

Counterexamples welcome.

I looked around for a picture of Tom Green wearing his Cheese Helmet, as in my opinion he was not improved by its addition. But Google Image Search is a fickle, lying whore.

I'm probably going to get shot down in flames for this...

peking duck

Oh, and I would put in a vote for garlic as the fifth element.

I second your nomination.

Certain kinds of soup would definitely *not* improve by adding one of the above.

Hmm. I don't think that Jello works with these items. Can't think of anything else right now.

I don't have time to respond right now, as I am on my way downstairs to make myself a bacon and cheese omelette topped with a dusting of freshly-grated Scharffen Berger.

Sushi.

(mmmm, bacon maki)

uni sushi. Especially not chocolate. Even several hours after eating uni, which I actually liked but will probably never choose to eat again, burping while eating a chocolate bar was by far the most disgusting culinary experience I've ever had.

My two basic food groups:

Good with whipped cream
Good with garlic butter

But I love the way you think. Mmmmm, bacon. . . cheese. . .chocolate. . .butter.

No, no, you fool! It's
- food that goes with gin, and
- food that goes with beer

Maybe I'm just a wuss, but I can't imagine any of those improving my limeade.

Dairy in Thai cooking would be just nasty.

Does that mean you endorse a bacon and chocolate panang curry?

[identity profile] justjenine.livejournal.com 2003-12-14 08:07 pm (UTC)(link)
We have long had the belief around this house that everything can be improved by either bacon or chocolate. Sure, butter, cheese, and garlic are all good, but they lack the universality of bacon and chocolate. All the same, it'll be nice to have a couple of extra options if our old standbys fail us!

[identity profile] lusercop.livejournal.com 2003-12-15 02:35 am (UTC)(link)
Bacon's bad if you're vegetarian. The others I'd mostly agree with though, and garlic. Mmmmm, garlic.

Does it fly, too?

I nominate sex as the sixth element.

I'm not sure how you'd cook with sex. I'm not even certain if i want to know.

[identity profile] eviltofu.livejournal.com 2003-12-15 01:13 pm (UTC)(link)
Everything tastes better after sex.

[identity profile] lusercop.livejournal.com 2006-02-06 08:08 am (UTC)(link)
So what you're saying is that sex leaves a bad taste in your mouth?

I shall not be swayed!

[identity profile] tigresse.livejournal.com 2003-12-16 06:54 pm (UTC)(link)
I'll gladly agree to four of the five given elements: bacon, cheese, garlic, and chocolate. I, however, think that the butter category should be expanded to 'fat' so that it may include duck fat and other pork and dairy fats.

Okay, beef and chicken fats also acceptable.
