drive-by grammar nazi!

Remember how cyber- was the prime affliction in the late `90s among heinous neologisms?  Now it's -erati.  These fragmentary words MEAN NOTHING.  DO NOT USE THEM.  Leave such heinousness to President Bush, so he may announce a meeting with his cyberstrategerati.

EDIT: Results 1 - 50 of about 240 for cyberati.  Someone's gonna pay.

Can we add -gate for any scandal thing to that?

Hoo, boy, that one's been around since, what, the Reagan years? Yeah, it's time to retire it. You'd think the Watergate scandal was about water!

You know, the term "cheeseburger" is based on similar pseudo-affix neology.

You're one of those "retroactive abortion" people, aren't you.

Sorry, I meant to say "This is an Illuminati plot!"

[identity profile] therobbergirl.livejournal.com 2006-03-03 09:10 pm (UTC)(link)
On an unrelated note, I object to the pronunciation of neology. What makes it so special that it has to be different from biology and geology? Just a snob is our high falutin' neology.

[identity profile] eejitalmuppet.livejournal.com 2006-03-03 09:08 pm (UTC)(link)
How about referring to Bush and his cronies as the "giterati", or possibly the "stupid-giterati"?

Yes, I know: bad badger, no earthworms.

i think you can blame [livejournal.com profile] owenthomas for this, incidentally.

I missed the whole -erati boat. I was there for cyber-, though.

I think now the trend is the number "2.0".

[identity profile] ronebofh.livejournal.com 2006-03-03 09:38 pm (UTC)(link)
That one's been around for a while (Garbage's Version 2.0 came out in `98), but "Web 2.0" has definitely reached "I NEVER FUCKING WANT TO HEAR YOU SAY THIS AGAIN EVER EVER" levels.

What set me off with -erati is "technorati", "digerati", and what i read today: "blogerati".

The term of art among the cognoscenti (that's a whole word, not an affix bolted on to a harmless existing morpheme) nowadays is 'pajamahadeen'.

[identity profile] iayork.livejournal.com 2006-03-04 04:05 am (UTC)(link)
Who said blogerati? Can I kill them?

Please? I promise I'll do it slowly.

It may just be the review article I was reading yesterday, but I would swear that it's now bio-. You just know that Bush is getting ready to get down with his biostrategerati, and then claim later that the meeting never happened.

I'm gonna continue using the word administrati and there's nothin you can do about it, Bunky.

That depends on what you mean. I'll admit that this horse left the barn decades ago with "glitterati", but that at least still contains the original word and thus earns clever points.

However, I am interviewing a cyberneticist next week, so I have no room to comment.

Wait, no I haven't. There is no such thing as the enumerati. They don't exist, even if they did!

Before cyber there was Turbo. Everything was TurboThis, TurboThat. Fortunately that seems to be well and truly TurboOver.
