short shameful confession

Sirius and XM completed their merger a few weeks ago, and something that popped up on the Rock station in the last day or two was the ABBA channel — all ABBA, all the time.  Scary, i know.  But just now i had to listen to it because they were playing the Spanish version of "Chiquitita", which was my favorite song in second grade and is probably the first favorite song i can remember having.

They pulled some of that in on the hockey channel this morning. I listen to the hockey channel so I don't have to listen to Abba!

This ppst reeks of win. Or possibly fail. The two smell too similar these days.

How many hours of music would an ABBA channel be able to play before repeating itself? WKCR's annual Bach Marathon plays 170+ hours of non-repeating Bach.

That's a good question. I've wondered the same thing while listening to the Led Zeppelin channel; they'll play LZ covers, LZ live material, and solo work by LZ members as filler (although i've yet to notice any John Paul Jones work, damn their eyes).

The LZ channel first popped up on XM about a year or so ago and lasted a few months. Later they experimented with a month of Coldplay, then a month of Metallica, then they put up an AC/DC station, which was made permanent once the two radiospaces were merged, to go along with Sirius's other permanent channels: Jimmy Buffett, The Grateful Dead, and Bruce Springsteen. Ugh. But at least they brought the LZ channel back. Needless to say, i've been reëvaluating my subscription, but i'll probably want it back once baseball starts up again, and i can't stand commercial FM radio anyway.

ABBA makes me want to drown things.

As does Mel Karmazin. Since the hostile takeover^H^H^H^H^Hmerger, Mel has done everything he can to piss me off. Fuck him and all of his children.

Fungus permanently gone? Check. My Roady had Fungus playing more than everything else combined.
Special X permanently gone from the Online stream? Check.
Comedy 150 replaced by its Sirius equivalent? Check.
Rock stations mostly replaced by their Sirius equivalents? Check.

I'm astonished that the Joint and Deep Tracks survived, but I'm afraid to thank them for fear that they'll find out I like that and cancel it too.

Yeah, i was glad Deep Tracks and Earl Bailey survived, but they have douchebag DJs talking over the music on 1st Wave. If i wanted to listen to douchebag DJs talking over `80s music, i'd go to `80s on 8. And the Sirius "punk" station, Faction, has some English fuckwad and his cronies on afternoons who are completely insufferable tits.

They also tanked [livejournal.com profile] rotojeff's fantasy baseball show. So, yeah, fuck Sirius.

There are douchebag DJs on 1st Wave. There is also The Cure on 1st Wave, which makes me doubly likely to stay away from 1st Wave.

(There are exactly two men in rock music who can get away with feminine makeup while rocking out. Fee Waybill and David Bowie. Neither gets 1st Wave airplay. Robert Smith is a Big Fat Girl.)

Faction is a hunk of shit.

Madison is a hunk of shit.

I will say that I was having issues with XM before the switchover and had problems finding ten stations worth presetting. At the moment, I have 10 stations largely because I have an inexplicable soft spot for Jimmy Buffett and Jam On, but some of my new presets are on double secret probation.

As a former piano student, I can assure you that 170 hours of non-repeating Bach sounds like 2 minutes on a loop. The Philip Glass of his day.

I must disagree with you. When I lived in New York, I listened to those marathons with pleasure and interest; they kept my attention, hour after hour.

¡AI YAI YAI!

I'm sorry, you've mistaken my journal for [livejournal.com profile] haineux's.

Wait, you mean

[identity profile] notr.livejournal.com 2008-12-20 12:33 am (UTC)(link)
that tag in his profile is supposed to mean he's interested in Philip Kirkorov's Dick?
(In case you haven't already, be sure to jump to the last few seconds of the video for the punch line.)

Damn you, milkman Rone

You know you're getting old when you're pissed that sirius passed up the kids channel for the xm version.

abba, uh, not for me, but we all have our secrets.

i think the merger will be great, once it works itself out. i'm psyched about mlb access, and i just can't stand the thought of testicle radio.

Also, i suggest calling in or emailing requests, I get the feeling you will be heard.
