Google claims that this is the first occurrence of "YOU HAVE GREATLY MISUNDERSTOOD THE PURPOSE OF [X]".

I think it was, actually, at least as far as I remember.

Ah, the golden days of a.f.w.... Some of mine are still in the archives, too.

Wow... We used to use (a permutation of (http://www.bbchatter.org/archive/files/reply.form.html)) that form on bb.chatter on the VAX at JMU. We called it the "Standard Reply Form," or SRF.

It *has* to be older than that, because I'm sure it was used @JMU longer than 1992, as 1) We used a permutation of the form, and 2) I don't know anyone who read a.f.w. I bet [livejournal.com profile] dwenius/plord could speak to this.

I never read alt.fan.warlord. I do, however, have a 1994 copy from alt.config which begins as follows:

STANDARDIZED BONEHEAD REPLY FORM
(original by David Parsons)
(who stole it from George McQuary)
(who shamelessly appropriated the idea from Dave Sweeney)

I'll go ask David Parsons if he remembers more...
