viva nerd prom!

(yes, yes, 'nerd prom' is ™ warren ellis and san diego comic-con)

This year's DunDraCon was a lot of fun.  On Friday, i registered and hung out in [livejournal.com profile] anotherdave's zombie game (which was played under [livejournal.com profile] vajrabot's Fates Worse Than Death system), which counted not one, but two couples among its players.  At the break, we chatted a bit, and after that i took off to confirm whether i'd gotten into my morning games; i didn't, so i dropped by the room where [livejournal.com profile] palecur and [livejournal.com profile] amywithani were playing.  It turned out a bunch of their friends were there, so i got to say hi to [livejournal.com profile] deirdremoon and [livejournal.com profile] devonapple, as well as meet [livejournal.com profile] racerxmachina.  Best of all, [livejournal.com profile] tronpublic treated me by playing Michael Hedges's "Ragamuffin" on the guitar, with every little flourish.  Marvelous work, sir.

On Saturday, i saw [livejournal.com profile] vampyrecat, [livejournal.com profile] vajrabot, and [livejournal.com profile] victortenzin, and [livejournal.com profile] vampyrecat generously gave me her priority slip, which i used to get into Bruce Mattos's game, which is the one game every year that i don't want to miss.  This year's game wasn't quite as good as previous games, with the ending being rather anticlimactic, mostly due to poor play on behalf of certain party members.

On Sunday, i ended up in Peter Christian's game that was geared towards "beginning players, ages 10+".  I played with three boys and three girls that were around 12, and the father of two of the boys.  The game was a lot of fun; the setting was a California about 200 years ago, but with orcs, kobolds, and dragons.  There was one conversation that left me shaking my head:

[DM mentions something about orcs pillaging a rancho]
RANGER GIRL: "Remember, it's loot first, then pillage!"
SPECTATOR GIRL: "Oh, yeah!  I saw that on a T-shirt!"
RANGER GIRL: "And before those two, first you rape!"
CLERIC BOY: "There's something wrong about that."
ME: "Something very, very wrong."
Overall, there were a lot more women and kids than i normally see, and that's a great sign.  [livejournal.com profile] elmuchacho also attended, but we didn't get to hang out much; however, he made some friends quickly and seemed to have a great time, too.  His friend Brendan managed to register a game, but also managed to flake completely on it, much to my and David's consternation.  For next year, David and i fully intend to submit official games.

Nope, only done DDC. I might branch out to KublaCon and ConQuest this year.

A gaming con with women and kids??

You sure you didn't stumble into a sewing bee?

I got lost on the way to the mall and had to carve my way out through a seething mass of reeking nerdbois, just me and my trusty nailfile, can of Final Net, and a Zippo...

Yes. Girls at gaming cons. And guys at sewing bees, too.

Did using Fates Worse Than Death for zombies seem to work well?

I wish I had known - I would have loved to have at least dropped in and observed for a bit.

Thank you sir.

I am boggled to learn that there is a special lingerie which is like a trump card, a Get Out of Jail Free, an M:TG Instant - except, when played, it gets you into the Role-Playing Game of Already Maximum Fullness.

Priority slip indeed. How did you get her to take it off?
