ah, irony, my constant friend

The one time i've had to pick through my food because it's filled with stuff i don't like is the time i break down and have a coworker order pizza because everyone else went to lunch without me (jerks).  I just wanted a lamb topping, but it arrived with lamb, green and red peppers, onions and olives.

The pizza arrived with a packet of ketchup, too.  Disgusting.

Peppers and onions, man. Peppers and onions.

In Japan, ketchup is the standard topping for an omelette.

And I was hoping that that intriguing-looking red sauce on the first (and last) Japanese omelette that I had back in 2000 would be some interesting exotic new flavor.

Oh, the rigors of distant travel! The struggles of the Victorians pale!

Don't feel bad. They're probably off arranging a fabulous snipe-hunt on elephant-back for you later in the evening.

Pizza? ... with a lamb topping?

Freakin' californiuts.

Dude, it's India. It's either lamb or chicken. The Pizza Hut menu actually lists pepperoni, but there's an asterisk next to it: "(Temporarily discontinued due to import restrictions)"

Bwah! Somehow I managed to miss almost every single one of your posts about going to India. (I got the one about being in the airport in Singapore, but who knows what that's all about anyway.) Nebbuhmind.

Indian Pizza

When Joey & I were in Amsterdam at the beginning of this month, we had tandoori chicken pizza that was SOOO good! It had nothing except chicken & cheese on it and it was definitely some of the best pizza I ever had.

Filipinos love ketchup on all sorts of things like rice, spam, and eggs. Mmmm. Now I'm getting hungry! (:

I gag in sympathy.
Our tastes are shaped so strongly by our individual cultures, regions, families, pathologies...

Oh quit whining and eat your food. It hasn't killed them. It won't kill you.

If i don't eat peppers, onions, or ketchup on my pizza in the US, i don't see any reason to do so here.

My attempt at rone-style commentary has failed.

I must revisit the Book of Rone

I have to admit that peppers and onions are almost de rigeur on pizza as far as I'm concerned. The lamb must be a strange experience, but I can see it working if the lamb is spicy, or very lean. I have seen doner kebab meat served on pizzas over here, but the idea didn't appeal to me.

[identity profile] eejitalmuppet.livejournal.com 2006-08-31 07:16 pm (UTC)(link)
Not that i eat pizza these days. Making my own pizzas was one of the things I gave up after the high cholesterol warning.

[identity profile] rimrunner.livejournal.com 2006-08-31 07:22 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm allergic to onions, sadly. Though practically speaking, it just means that Mr. Darcy and I put more garlic in everything. Mmm, garlic.

[identity profile] eejitalmuppet.livejournal.com 2006-08-31 07:36 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh, I'll happily settle for garlic instead of onions in a pizza. As an aside, if you ever get to Finland, garlic = valkosipuli. The literal translation of that is "white onion".

I will happily accept garlic on pizza. The first time i had garlic on a pizza was with RICHH at a time when i was, um, vastly intoxicated.

[identity profile] opadit.livejournal.com 2006-08-31 10:30 pm (UTC)(link)
Really! I thought an onion allergy was completely unique to another friend of mine. Now I wonder how rare it actually is.

She also puts tons of garlic into stuff that would otherwise usually have onions in it.

Onion Allergy

Joey's not allergic to onions, he just can't stand them. Ironically, he has tested positive for tomato allergy but loves those.

My Scary Auntie seems to be allergic to onions.

And thhe ketchup that you got tastes like corn syrup with red food dye added to it.

It is almost as bad as Indian paper napkins!

All ketchup is an abomination, so i'm not about to say that one version is worse than another.

Indian paper napkins are weird, though. Like, almost shiny.

They smear things around rather than absorb.

The first month I was in China, my boss took me to a restaurant that specialized in American-style pizza. The owner and the chef came out to meet me (longnose roundeye mans are big celebrities in most of China) and promised to serve me a really great pizza.

It took them over two hours to cook the damn thing, and when it arrived, the crust was (no exaggeration) over five inches tall, and made of cornbread. The toppings included oil, shrimp, corn, and a fried egg... no cheese, and no tomato sauce of any kind, not even ketchup.

Mmmm, pizza.
