no good deed goes unpunished

When Marine Lance Cpl. David Battle learned he'd either have to sacrifice his ring finger or the wedding band he wore, he told doctors at a field hospital in Iraq to cut off the finger.

[...]

With his approval, doctors severed his finger, but somehow in the chaos that followed, they lost his ring.
<kanzen> odds are he's going to get divorced next year
<kanzen> his wife is probably cheating on him right now

Gah. The ring is not the marriage, it is a SYMBOL. You can get a new ring. You can repair the old one. You cannot grow another damned finger.

Stupid teenager.

that story resides somewhere in the murky waters between romantic and retarded.

I think the word "Marine" about sums all that up.
Bless their little gung-ho brains...

What an idiot.

You know, I've often thought that as a whole, Americans seem to have a problem telling the difference between a symbol (like their flag) and what it symbolizes (like their country). This is just another example of that.

I suspect that this is the root cause behind idiotic behavior like the anti-flag burning amendment and the 'protection' of marriage.

*sigh* It is depressing, but the wife probably *IS* cheating on him. You know, because marriage is so sacred.

NNNNGGGGGNNN

Pull my finger.

(the devil made me do it)

Well of course they lost the ring. Its work here is done. It is now seeking out its original master.

You are a bad man.

Man, ANOTHER reason I'm glad I got rid of mine

"A Portuguese soccer player lost a finger when he caught his wedding ring on a fence while celebrating a goal for his Swiss team."

He even got a yellow card for excessive celebration.

Well

That's got to be the dumbest thing I ever heard.

I have to agree with the person who said American's have trouble telling the difference between symbols and what they represent.

But the point that everyone seems to glide by so easily is this: I'm 19 years old, and I'm being blown to bits - but for what?

My own wedding band is currently floating somewhere in the North Atlantic, having been ripped off my finger by the undertow of Rehoboth Beach a couple of summers ago, unless it's washed ashore since then.

My marriage is fine, though my wife was nigh-inconsolable on the day that it happened.

Boy don't a lot of englightened romantics read your journal. ;P

"Enlightened romantic" is a bit of an oxymoron, i'd say.

There sure were a lot of oxymorons running around in the 18th century!
