now that's what i call acting

At the Council of Elrond, when Frodo stands up and exclaims, "I will take it," Gandalf closes his eyes with an expression of utter, regretful grief. It makes my heart sink and brings tears to my eyes, every damn time.

I love Ian McKellen. He's so present in every character he plays.

The bit near the end where Frodo's hearing again what Gandalf told him in Moria (slightly modified) is total Oscar Bait, but it gets me every time.

that is an amazing piece of acting. more subtle but hardly less so is a similar reaction shot when frodo is examining the ring fresh out of the fire. he's hoping against hope that no letters will appear and when f. says 'wait...' it is like all of the air has been let out of his soul.

he better win something, dammit.
