Your favorite psycho vegetarian radicals put up a billboard in Boston showing the Virgin Mary cradling a dead chicken and the caption "Go Vegetarian — It's an Immaculate Conception." A friend hates any media mention of PETA, because everything they do is so calculated to outrage and draw attention to themselves that writing up a story about their idiotic shenanigans just encourages them to keep them up. I just wonder what they're trying to accomplish; attention for attention's sake is fine, but what are their goals, and how do their stupid human tricks advance them towards those goals?

Loony radicals draw attention. The press does not want to talk to the loony radicals, but they want to seem balanced. So they talk to some "moderate" vegetarian or animal activist who gently disapproves of the wackier antics of PETA, then talks about the meat of the issue. They do not say but probably understand that if it were not for PETA, they would not be thought of as moderate, and they would not be getting press.

I -wish- the press was as balanced as you say

So... you're saying PETA is a plant (HAW HAW) by moderate vegetarians in order to get some respect?

The press LOVES to focus on weirdos. I wonder how many Peta members think the other members are freaks

Personally, their shenanigans make me want to eat more meat, not less.

And I say that as a former vegetarian.

aside from the shenanigans

Peta's fuck-you style aside, what is the immaculate conception ad supposed to mean? I don't get it. I grew up way Catholic, so it seems like I ought to get it, but I don't. The only thing I came up with was "meat-eating equals original sin," but that seems too obscure and academic to be what they meant. I must be missing the obvious.

I think they're trying to say that eating chicken is like eating Jesus. But Catholics do that all the time! No, maybe they mean that going vegetarian is like being impregnated by an angel... and that your child will be a chicken. Ugh, this is really confusing.
