You should have used check boxes. I'd have checked all three.

Hmm, i think that defaults to choice #3, but what do i know?

[identity profile] ratphooey.livejournal.com 2010-04-01 01:55 pm (UTC)(link)
Hah.

Instead, I picked the one I thought was most true.

One and two do not seem mutually exclusive to me. Though I'd probably tweak two to "Providing women with access to all options and resources available to men, even if that means they choose to perpetuate misogynistic patriarchal culture."

Well, yeah, if i'd gone to the trouble... but it's a complex issue and this was about as articulately flippant as i could manage at the time. Also, i would point out that your suggestion is covered by answer 3.

More seriously, i think that #1 is right simply because people make bad choices all the time. The way i see it, settling for #2 ignores the rest of #1's implications.

[identity profile] occhiblusf.livejournal.com 2010-04-03 02:04 am (UTC)(link)
Can you explain what you mean more? In my mind, reminding folks that people will make bad choices even when presented with as much information as possible and even when as many barriers as possible are removed, is important within feminism because it takes away some of the tendency to blame individuals for their choices and instead looks at systematic pressures. In actual English, that would be something like, I would like to live in a world where a woman can wear lipstick and miniskirts if she finds it appropriate, and misogynists don't claim she's a slut and fucking over all men (covered by answer number one) and feminists don't claim she's a sell-out and fucking over all women (covered by answer number two).

So I don't see #2 as settling, but I'd be interested to hear why you do.

I guess that i'm coming at it like a sysadmin; #1 is the root cause from which #2 is a result. One thing that [livejournal.com profile] mouseworks told me some time ago (and i hope i'm remembering this correctly) was that sometimes Muslim women in Europe who wear the veil are doing so to buck the politically correct establishment, and in doing so are asserting their culture, even if to my Western eyes, that culture has inherent male-dominant elements (i also think of the odd juxtaposition of the Muslim women i see sometimes at my soccer facility who come to see their husbands play, and they're wearing a scarf and clothes that cover them completely, but they're also wearing makeup and stilettos).

There are certainly systematic pressures, but the individual choices we make can either reinforce or combat those pressures. And the choices we make can be made for completely different reasons than others assume, but at the same time, we should consider the reactions of others before making that choice. In short: people are a problem.

One guy wanted women to wear short skirts and high heels to please the eyes of old men. This of course meant that old women were invisible, fat women were invisible, and he wasn't consciously thinking about what high heel calf muscles look like (women having orgasms). I suggested old men should shave their legs and wear high heels.

I said that if I were running a dress code, men would be in three piece vested suits with tie pins and women would wear tea length dresses and sensible shoes (there are some health reasons for long skirts for women without underwear, actually, especially in cultures without hot and cold running water).

I'm also in favor of seizing all textile related industries and turning them over to women so women can fulfill their traditional roles. Also get guys out of medicine, how silly is a male doctor (the UK seems to be ahead of the US in restoring women's roles in medicine, see the chick who whored while waiting to finish her research Ph.D). I'm not even sure that guys should be building houses, either. I'm all for traditional women's work. Guys should also not be writing fiction narrative. Poetry is for the guys (and this should only be courtship poetry); story telling is women's work. Also abstract art -- guys should stick to doing the realistic stuff. Women have traditionally been the abstractionist.

[identity profile] mouseworks.livejournal.com 2010-04-01 04:41 pm (UTC)(link)
Bet very small amount of something that more guys checked the third response than women, but I could be wrong.

So far, only 2 of 14 are women, so you win the bet.

[identity profile] vampyrecat.livejournal.com 2010-04-01 05:13 pm (UTC)(link)
Ok, so, I hated all your choices, so I picked #3 because it was funny to me. But Yeah, or No, I think all the arguing about what feminism is is just a distraction from working on real problems with gender inequality. So, yeah. Whatever, I gave up on "feminism" a long time ago and I just try to make the world a better place for everyone. That is, I do that when I'm not playing Plants v. Zombies, watching youtube, or otherwise wasting this life of mine. :)

What's to hate about choice #1? I mean, it's a little clichéd by now, but otherwise...

[identity profile] dawn-guy.livejournal.com 2010-04-01 05:54 pm (UTC)(link)
The number of people picking option three, and some of their identities, is a sad mini-commentary in itself. Even if they're joking? Especially if they think or claim they're joking.

[identity profile] dr-strych9.livejournal.com 2010-04-01 06:12 pm (UTC)(link)
I picked option three because I thought the name of the poll was a dick move.

did you notice that this post caused BaBa O'Reilly To Come OUT as GAY!

[identity profile] drieuxster.livejournal.com 2010-04-02 04:18 am (UTC)(link)
The evil rone posts this post and BaBa O'Reilly opts to come out as both pro-gay and anti-white christian american!

QED!

Rone has the evil eye on BaBa O'Reilly proving that Faux News has been a gay front all of these years!

Hey, if feminists themselves can't agree on it, I can't imagine that there's a radio button in the whole universe I could click that would shed light on the question.

I think that i'm a little surprised by the high amount of it, yeah, even given that it's not a wholly serious poll.

I was tempted to pick 3 as the "I want to complain about this poll" option since I don't really agree with any of them. I decided to just not vote instead.

I nearly picked it

[identity profile] notr.livejournal.com 2010-04-04 12:57 pm (UTC)(link)
since you framed it as the obvious option and the stupid option. But the obvious option was just a little too obvious to pass up.
