I have a friend who used to work at Merrill-Lynch, and he too had the "Assistant VP" title attached to his IT title. Apparently they hand these things out like paperclips in the financial industry.

It's not just the financial industry.

My boss, who anywhere else would simply be "Systems Manager", has a VP title. He manages five people.

Why, yes, finance sector.

It's a common and convenient way of determining which bonus pool you fall into at the end of the year. Without at least an AVP after your name, you get a pittance.

Nations Bank (now Bank of America) made anyone who was higher than a branch teller a VP. Making them management stops them from unionizing.
