the kind nature of the european BOFH

After i gave him a hand with shipping him some computer parts near my locality, [livejournal.com profile] rbarclay took it upon himself to thank me by sending me some Austrian wine.  It arrived earlier this week:

Vielen danke! More than i deserve.

(Apropos, it seems that some people in New Zealand are considering St. Laurent as an alternative to Pinot Noir.)

Today, i received my Hidden Music shirt, along with a handwritten note on behalf of [livejournal.com profile] covertmusic, [livejournal.com profile] fanf and [livejournal.com profile] lusercop wishing me and Kim a happy anniversary.  Thanks, guys!

Our pleasure. Glad it's turned up so fast!

If the SOs father remembers correctly, the St. Laurent is a rather strong wine, near 13 vol% alc - meaning it should keep nearly forever if not stored in an overly warm environment.

Heh, "rather strong"... you crazy Old Worlders. Here in California, 14% is not unusual, with zinfandels often hitting 15%.

"rather strong" in a keep-for-how-long kind of sense. As I was told, an 11 vol% one will keep about a year, at 12 % it's more like 3-4 years and from 13 upwards it goes near infinity. But then again, I don't know shit about wine ;)

Alcohol content really isn't a factor when it comes to a wine's aging potential; that depends more on a wine's acidity, tannins, and fruitiness.

Wow, that was quick! I'm just catching up now, having been away for 5 days! We were all sitting in the room, and Andrew said "what shall we say to Ron?", the answer was obviously "Congratulations on 8 years!" :-)
