dear tim o'reilly

It's not bad enough that you people have badly reinvented Usenet as "Web 2.0", but now you're trying to reinvent netiquette, too.  It's a clever idea that completely ignores the reality of online interaction.

“I take back what I said earlier.  There were a couple of taunting profanities right after my last comment, and I thought, "who needs this?" and deleted them.”  These words are yours, and they immediately show why a "Code of Conduct" is a joke.  PEOPLE OF THE BOGOSPHERE: the Internet is labeled "HERE BE DRAGYNS".  Proceed with caution.  If you control an area of discussion, CONTROL IT.  Codes of conduct are for country clubs and shopping malls.

I like "bogosphere", because you can read it two ways: "bogo-sphere", which conveys its bogosity; and "bog-o-sphere", which conveys its being a bog (in the English slang sense).

Wouldn't the bogosphere be filled with Russian Orthodox theology?

Isn't bogo-sphere where you buy one ball and get another free?

I guess there are a number of reasons I shouldn't make this my new .sig.

Clearly Cthulhu has you on Speed Dial...

And we are so thankful for that...

Maybe this is the way to go.

As much as I like the idea, I may end up having to kill you for the quality on the font rendering.

Also, you should have seen the earlier version.

Or, rather, that would have been bad.

Cool, reinventing USENET as Prodigy. That's awesome.

and the Up Side Here????

[identity profile] drieuxster.livejournal.com 2007-04-11 07:26 pm (UTC)(link)

I like the idea of trying to help the civilians come to grips with the need to be civil, but uh, isn't that just a part of the core problem here???

We have too many civilians who are valiantly Fighting The War Against What Not as the Militant, and Gloriously Victorious, Fighting 101st Keyboardists, rather than risk the social unpleasantry that is covered in such Hot Rocketting Best Selling Winners like Military Operations in Low Intensity Conflict (http://www.globalsecurity.org/military/library/policy/army/fm/100-20/index.html) and those Other Page Turners in the whole FM-100 Series of Field Manuals....

And Yes Stoners there really is FM 100-23: PEACE OPERATIONS (http://www.globalsecurity.org/military/library/policy/army/fm/100-23/) so it is not all just fun in the sun bombing the Hun...

So BE!!!! All that You Can Be!!!

Country Clubs

Bullshit.

cf: Rodney Dangerfield (http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0001098/) and Chevy Chase (http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0000331/) in "Caddy Shack" (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0080487/)

"Caddyshack" is so overrated. I think it's just a product of the era, and simply hasn't aged well.
