steven spielberg, scientologist tool

Tom Cruise drops his guard and allows a famous German magazine to interview him.  Maybe he felt safe because he had Spielberg with him.  The best part is where Spielberg tries to compare his foundation's Holocaust awareness work to Cruise's Scientology evangelism, but there are many choice quotes:

Spielberg: We wanted to make a film in which people join forces, across all borders and despite all their differences, in order to fight against an enemy who is not of a human nature.
God knows that having people join forces despite all their differences for a purpose OTHER than fighting is incomprehensible to the movie-going public.
SPIEGEL: We visited one of your locations near Los Angeles and were amazed to find a fully staffed tent of the Scientology organization right next to the food tents for the journalists and extras.

Cruise: What were you amazed about?
Why, that America doesn't recognize the danger inherent in your revolting cult, instead choosing to protect it as a religion.  Jim Jones peaked early; if he'd held on for another 10 years, he'd be set!
SPIEGEL: Do you see it as your job to recruit new followers for Scientology?

Cruise: I'm a helper. For instance, I myself have helped hundreds of people get off drugs. In Scientology, we have the only successful drug rehabilitation program in the world. It's called Narconon.

SPIEGEL: That's not correct. Yours is never mentioned among the recognized detox programs. Independent experts warn against it because it is rooted in pseudo science.

Cruise: You don't understand what I am saying. It's a statistically proven fact that there is only one successful drug rehabilitation program in the world. Period.
The reason Spiegel failed to understand what Cruise was saying is probably due to obstructive body thetans.  But Scientology can help them with that!
SPIEGEL: There is a difference between hate and having a critical perspective.

Cruise: For me, it's connected with intolerance.
OMG Operation Clambake is just anti-Scientologist bigotry!!!!

This amuses me (from the Wikipedia piece on Narconon):
Particular criticism has been directed at the therapy's use of vitamins and sauna sessions in quantities several times greater than medically recommended.
IHNJH, IJLS "medically recommended quantity of sauna sessions".

Whoah, shit. I've stopped reading Der Spiegel more than a decade ago, but I think I'll buy a copy tomorrow. I stopped reading when they went all tabloid, but this feels like one of the provocative interviews from way back when Stefan Aust was really running the shop.

(Not that I ever agreed with Austs opinions, but he did a spectacular job of keeping his opinions and facts apart. Read his book about the RAF, if you can, "Der Baader-Meinhof - Komplex".)

I'm pretty sure this interview was conducted in English (of course), translated by the interviewer into German for Der Spiegel, and then retranslated back into English. I'm a professional translator, and I can totally see German syntax shining through this (suspiciously) nearly slang-free discourse.

I find this kind of thing creepy and hard to read, even though I know it's very common for an interviewer not to have a print-ready version of the original English interview available to the folks who then want to republish it in English -- weirdly, it ends up being "easier" and "faster" to have the German text translated just like all the articles that started out German. *sigh* Anyway.

Classic cult brainwashing and supersized Hollywood egos are a dangerous combination indeed. Cruise, Travolta, and the rest of the Elron Cabal need to be kidnapped and deprogrammed.

Maybe I'll set up a PayPal tip jar on my site to collect donations.

He means death!

Wow, another reason to hate post-Jaws Spielberg. Excellent.
