been there, done that

My boss and i had a very similar moment to today's Dilbert a few weeks ago; he was trying to set up our delegated reverse DNS and getting nothing.  He called me to his desk; i looked at the zone file and immediately pointed out that the serial number was too long.  He was far from thrilled.

I used to do that sort of thing all the time. Y'know, when I did actual technical work.

I've been on both ends of this scenario, but since every company I've worked for has had a mandatory problem-escalation policy that kicks in after a couple of hours, significantly less feather-ruffling occurs if the next person in the escalation chain solves the problem.

When I saw that last night it brought back memories of doing that to junior techs at old jobs.

I've been known to do that. Also, in a past life, I was the GCC Error Message Oracle — or perhaps a co-oracle, since I'd take error messages they couldn't understand and return useful information, and mythological oracles tended to go in the other direction comprehensibility-wise.

Good job, you.

I read that Dilbert during my lunch break that day. I liked it.
