friends don't let friends drunk-post to lj

OK, so i'm on my fourth beer and it was the last, lonely Red Hook ESB in the fridge, and nobody else spotted it, so that's cool.  And, um.  Yeah.  I have iTunes blasting music and people are milling around drinking beer and shooting the shit and climbing cubicle walls (not me, honest).  There's a vibe of nervous release floating about, and it's simultaneously exciting and enervating.  Maybe it's just the collective adrenaline wearing off.

That's all.  WOOOOO!!!!!  PARTAY!!!!

We got to 65 on irc before someone pointed out that the flash page that it's from has additional stuff on the left side.

Then someone decided to google for it, and acted all uppity about having answers that weren't in the puzzle, but were 'right' according to entering them into the flash thing, and it stopped being fun.

58 bands. There are clues to the names of bands in the picture. For example, check out the Stones that are Rolling down the street....

Excellent. You're in the perfect frame of mind to cross the street and buy something at Limn.

Sorry too gay.

Get a hooker instead.

I don't get it. You're being taken over by Adobe, right? So why the party?

What's with being able to play music and drink beer at work, anyways? I've never worked anywhere that would allow sandals, let alone a party.

I think the decline of my company started about two years ago, when they passed the "no drinking in the office" rule.

One guy actually cried as he carried his beer fridge out.

It's a pretty typical "HELLO WE'RE FUCKED SO LET'S GET. FUCKED. UP." party. Eat, drink, and be merry, etc. Nobody was doing any damn work at all anyway, so loud music and lots of beer was perfectly acceptable. I do play music and drink beer while working anyway, but that's more on the lowdown: music at a volume that does not discommode my neighbors, and i'll very rarely have a beer at my desk, and that usually on a Friday afternoon.

Anyway, that's what working in Silicon Valley does for ya. Us computer nerds, we gotta live it up while our job still has an aura of demigodhood. Ten years down the road, we'll be as revered as car mechanics.

I'm starting* to think I chose the wrong industry. Being drunk in a chemistry lab is Really Fucking Stupid.

So California doesn't have any sort of no-tolerance drug and alcohol policy at work or anything? I'm not trying to be a jerk, I just can't imagine any workplace allowing employees to sit around and drink beer. Not just because of production but because of spills, people under 21 working in the building, and/or the liability of a drunk employee's behavior at work, or if said drunk employee leaves the building and plows into Bambi, Santa Claus, and Mother Theresa while driving home.

I'm just stunned. Sorry, but I am.

Not as far as i know. I mean, i imagine most companies do, but i don't believe it's a state law or policy.

I don't know if this got started during the dot bomb as a cultural thing, but that's certainly where i first encountered it. It definitely is a problem for the reasons you listed. I'd like to think that we policed each other well, and i never heard of anyone getting plastered until after they left the building.

I just had about fourteen glasses of wine. OK, I exaggerate a little. It was brought to the party by a gal who works for a local liquor distributor. It was GOOD WINE. I have no idea what it was. But it was good.

And now to settle my stomach, some crystalized ginger, and a tot of blackberry brandy. And then FLANNEL SHEETS. GOOD NIGHT GOD BLESS I NEED A REST.

I read through but I am still confused. You were drinking at work and then you said "those of us who are leaving..." but... I'm confused. Sorry.
