from my diseased mind

The latest hit film from the UK: "Slice It Like Ockham".  A young Gypsy girl in the early 15th century named Odilia wants to become a philosopher like her hero, William of Ockham, but her family frowns upon her becoming a Catholic.  She runs behind their backs and joins a convent, where she meets a talented and virtuous young woman named Joan whose passion is military strategy.  Their studies progress marvelously until they are separated when war calls Joan away.  When her best friend is burnt at the stake, Odilia vanishes mysteriously; was she translated into Heaven, or did she just run from her troubles?  The movie refuses to give any clues.  Two and a half stars.

Given that Occam was excommunicated (albeit by Avignon), why would a young girl want to emulate him by going into a convent? Even a hundred years later, they would not be teaching his Summa or his commentary on the Sentences.

Still, the Girl of Logic/Woman of War teamup has oomph to it. Perhaps, at the end, Odilia could come in on one of Leonardo's helicopters and save Joan from the pyre.

Hey, Beckham's a bit of a tool, too. And he married a Spice Girl.
