making the best of a bad situation, times two

I doubt any of you will be surprised to hear that Halle Berry won a Razzie for Catwoman.  However, what was surprising to me was that she appeared at the ceremony to receive her award.  Best parts: "A raucous crowd cheered her on as she gave a stirring recreation of her Academy Award acceptance speech, including tears. [...] “I want to thank Warner Brothers for casting me in this piece of shit,” she said as she dragged her agent on stage and warned him “next time read the script first.” " (via the formidable [livejournal.com profile] warrenelliscom)

In other wacky news about cultural and societal expectations, a Jew goes incognito to have a recruitment dinner with white supremacists (whose Jewdar is obviously rather broken).

I think Halle Berry is a good actress who's had the misfortune to be cast in a lot of bad roles (often in bad movies, though not always). Nice to know that she's a good sport, too.

That dinner is weird. It really is cultlike. Eek.

Another one John Safran did "first": for his series John Safran vs God one of his stunts was to interview the leader of a white supremacist group in LA and try to join. He did admit being Jewish after a while -- he wanted to know if Jew-hating Jews could join.

He finally got the guy to admit that while Safran couldn't join, if he had kids with a gentile woman they'd be allowed in.

The whole thing was pretty damned weird, which is par for the course with Safran. Other stunts included goat sacrifice, chicken sacrifice, doorknocking for athiesm in Salt Lake City, and buying magic underpants while he was there.

Oh, and an exorcism. Which was a bit scary because usually he takes the piss, but for that one you can't really be sure if he's for real or not.

I was going to post about Halle Berry's performance at the Razzies, but I couldn't think of anything more insightful to say than "I have a respect for her now that I didn't have twenty-four hours ago." She's a good sport if nothing else; I didn't sense in her recorded comments the desperation I think I'd experience if I were in her shoes.

I found a thread at an anti-racist Web site (http://www.mootstormfront.org/forum/archive/index.php/t-1358.html) where they discuss a thread at a racist Web site where they discuss this guy's article. Nobody wants to come forward and admit to being Kevin and his wife though.

This book jwgh sent me (http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/0743233212/) is a pretty good one in the "young goofball writer hangs out with various extremist weirdos" genre.

You should check out the book "Black Like Me" by John Howard Griffin.
