you're telling me wiccans DON'T hand out candy on samhain?

A Washington state school district is canceling its annual Halloween celebration, and the explanation has some parents baffled.

[...]

The district said Halloween celebrations and children dressed in Halloween costumes might be offensive to real witches.

"Witches with pointy noses and things like that are not respective symbols of the Wiccan religion and so we want to be respectful of that," Hansen said.
I can't wait for the response from the Wiccan Anti-Defamation League.

And I thought samhain was a host-based intrusion detection software.

I'm not precisely Wiccan, but I'm planning to hand out pentagram cookies.

Kinda the opposite of what happened in my school county (in the grand ol' state commonwealth of Virginia): We stopped celebrating Halloween at school because some conservative parents were complaining that it was devil-worship or some such nonsense.

Though he is right that withces with pointy noses aren't respective symbols of the Wiccan religion - those'd be bisexual 20somethings that wear all black.

WAAD. HAND.

[identity profile] rimrunner.livejournal.com 2004-10-21 04:43 pm (UTC)(link)
The traffic on the local mailing lists hereabouts is all of the "Huh?" variety, but a friend of mine claims that some High Priestess or other threatened to sue the school district. I'm trying to find out where he got that from because it's the first I heard of it, and the Pagan rumor mill is truly an impressive mechanism most of the time.

(There actually is, or was, a Witches' Anti-Defamation League. It was disbanded due to infighting. True story.)

It's actually a typo. Wiccan's hand out candy to shamen.

Showing disrespect

[identity profile] pennyhill.livejournal.com 2004-10-21 07:37 pm (UTC)(link)
Do all the children in that Puyallup school put on warty noses and pointy hats for Halloween? Does the entire town mock those of the Wiccan faith? Are you showing disrespect if you dress as a member of any OTHER faith on Halloween, and why is no concern about THAT expressed? I once went to a Halloween party in the Chicago area, hosted by a husband who was Polish and a wife who was Italian. The joint was lousy with Catholics, lapsed and active. We had 1 pope & 3 nuns (I was one of the nuns) in attendance. No one said dressing up like the Pope or a nun on Halloween was disrespectful.

Like Merde, I grab my head like a stunned monkey.

Maybe the deal is that no one is afraid of an offended Catholic, but they quake in their fishin' boots at the thought of a pissed off witch.

Perhaps it's the emissions from Mount St. Helens

Because we'll TURN them into TOADS! BWAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!

Perhaps it's the emissions from Mount St. Helens

The mountain hasn't emitted much lately. If it had blown when I was in Portland a few weeks ago, I coulda made some $$ with a bunch of glass bottles and Ebay.

A friend who was living in the right (or wrong?) place for the 1980 eruption went around afterward putting ash into bottles and selling them at yard sales as "Magic Sky Dirt".

Now, she says, we have Ebay. Imagine the possibilities.

Eeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee! On the other hand, if ya's got some big, nasty volcano burping ash all over the yard ... may as recoup some of your clean-up costs!

Solution to Warts!

Relief is at hand for the self-conscious witches of Washington ... and the solution comes from Madigan Army Medical Center in Tacoma, just a short drive from Puyallup to the West. (http://news.nationalgeographic.com/kids/2003/10/ducttape.html)Duct Tape! At last, something constructive people can do with all those cases of duct tape they bought to make their homes safe from dirty bombs! (Thank you, Tommy Thompson!)
