to neglect the Springfield Effect. (http://www.flat-earth.org/platygaea/springfieldparadox.html) I don't recall whether I first heard of this before or after (http://www.tvtome.com/tvtome/servlet/ShowForumPage/showid-146/threadid-37612/) the show began. It was definitely after the Tracy Ullman Show segments, but I don't think the town was named yet in those.
