This has nothing to do with your subject, but on the topic of horror movies I can say I almost entirely agree with you. The genre just isn't for me (unless it's a sendup like Evil Dead 2 or something). Then I saw Martyrs. It's the only horror movie I own. It starts off with a formulaic - if especially brutal - story of abuse and revenge. Then it turns ugly. It's part meditation on mortality and suffering, and part critique of US policies regarding our "detainees."
It's horrifying, relentless, and deeply unsettling. It does what horror movies are supposed to do. As to whether you want to be subjected to a movie that actually gets the job done, I leave to you.
